Meet MG (or Mystery Guy, MG for short), one of the playable characters from my team's project 'Taste Of Your Own Medicine'!
As the character artist for our team 'Chaos Panda', I wanted to create 4 unique player characters as part of the game experience. MG was the third character I concepted for the game; he was sculpted in Zbrush first before being re-topoed in Maya, and then I baked and textured him using Substance Painter. I also rigged, skinned and animated him before exporting him into Unity for our game. His face used a flipbook shader I created in Unity, using sprites I drew in Photoshop. His tri-count is 7,951.
MG/Mystery Guy/??? was an absolute blast from the moment I concepted him. Our team had a dedicated Discord channel to his personality, behaviours, mannerisms etc, we were always joking about what was under his hood and what sort of thing he'd do in various scenarios. Essentially, MG is a total mystery! I was debating having his face being completely hidden/non-existent or having some 'bandage'-type appearance, and decided to go with the latter. Following this decision, as he doesn't have typical facial feature like the other characters, I attached a plane to his face and created a separate material for it which used a flipbook shader in Unity and 2D sprites (of various facial expressions) which I drew in photoshop. It was incredibly refreshing to have a slightly different workflow for MG, and I'm glad I got to do it as I learnt a lot!
